"A wonderfully imaginative grown-up fantasy with all the magic of Harry Potter and Twilight." -People In a sparkling debut, A Discovery of Witches became the "it" book of early 2011, bringing Deborah Harkness into the spotlight and galvanizing fans around the world. In this tale of passion and obsession, Diana Bishop, a young scholar and the descendant of witches, discovers a long-lost and enchanted alchemical manuscript deep in Oxford's Bodleian Library. Its reappearance summons a fantastical underworld, which she navigates with her leading man, vampire geneticist Matthew Clairmont. Harkness has created a universe to rival those of Anne Rice, Diana Gabaldon, and Elizabeth Kostova, and she adds a scholar's depth to this riveting story of magic and suspense. And the story continues in Book Two, Shadow of Night.
In Harkness's lively debut, witches, vampires, and demons outnumber humans at Oxford's Bodleian Library, where witch and Yale historian Diana Bishop discovers an enchanted manuscript, attracting the attention of 1,500-year-old vampire Matthew Clairmont. The orphaned daughter of two powerful witches, Bishop prefers intellect, but relies on magic when her discovery of a palimpsest documenting the origin of supernatural species releases an assortment of undead who threaten, stalk, and harass her. Against all occult social propriety, Bishop turns for protection to tall, dark, bloodsucking man-about-town Clairmont. Their research raises questions of evolution and extinction among the living dead, and their romance awakens centuries-old enmities. Harkness imagines a crowded universe where normal and paranormal creatures observe a tenuous peace. "Magic is desire made real," Bishop says after both her desire and magical prowess exceed her expectations. Harkness brings this world to vibrant life and makes the most of the growing popularity of gothic adventure with an ending that keeps the Old Lodge door wide open. (Feb.)

11 . Outstanding!
Posted September 02, 2011 by Mary , Danville, GaThis is perhaps one of the best paranormal books I've ever read. It is more than a book of vampires and witches it's a page of history and a truly great love story. The story of Matthew and Diana is the stuff of fairy tales and this book was so hard to put down. I do hope the author plans on writing a sequel. The abrupt ending was the only disappointment as I wanted it to go on. A must read!!
12 . Excellent Read
Posted July 31, 2011 by Paul , Delray BeachThis compelling read takes a new twist on the old story of forbidden love. The story draws you in with cleaver reference to historical fact, and fantasy. The only disappointment of this book is that I will have to wait for the next, in what promises to be a long series, to be written.
Excellent read, thanks to the author for an wonderfull first novel!

18 . Excellent read
Posted July 01, 2011 by Lori , Fort Erie, ONI really enjoyed reading this book. At times there was some information that was a little more drawn out than it needed to be but overall, it was well written and fun. Basically it's a story of a vampire and a witch, how their attraction begins and how it evolves into a timeless love. I can't wait for the sequel to find out what happens to them.
