Breaking Dawn - Stephenie Meyer
August 04, 2008
I am happy I did not have high hopes for this book. I had it in my mind that it would be awful. In most cases, when I put something at the absolute bottom, it far exceeds my expectations and turns out to be one of the best things I have read or seen.
Such was not the case with Breaking Dawn. I wanted to like it -- I really did. I even read it TWICE to make sure I wasn't being overly fussy. This storyline is so far removed from her first novel, Twilight, that I still shake my head and ask, "What happened?!"
What a disappointment. I don't even know where to begin. The first chapter is so badly written it makes me wonder if she had even penned it herself. The ludicrous storyline with the expected ending was the final straw. There were no surprises. The only surprise I felt after finishing it twice was, "How the heck did this get published?"
It felt like Ms. Meyers was forced to put out a fourth and final book. I just wish it could have ended the same, but everything from the first to the last chapter be more believable and engaging. It just seemed so far fetched and underwhelming.
I won't give away any spoilers except for this -- Nessie? Come on!
My advice for anyone wanting to read this? (I never thought I would say this, either.) Go to the fan fiction sites. You will find better endings that are written and storylines that trump Ms Meyer's.
For people who are first timers to the Twilight series, stop at Twilight. Maybe read New Moon and if you're feeling like you want disappointment, read Eclipse. But please avoid Breaking Dawn.
