"You look fabulous, if I may say so."
"You certainly may." She returned the smile and eased herself into the car.
Instead of closing the door, Felix bent down beside her. He pulled the seat belt from behind her shoulder and draped it provocatively across her, then strapped her into place in a way that made Izzy unexpectedly think of bondage.
"No escape now," he said with a twinkle in his eye and smiled at her again. Then he leaned in and brushed his lips gently against hers.
"And what makes you think I'd want to escape, Professor Silverman?"
"Professor, eh? That's what I like to hear. Now, Isobel, are you going to be a good girl or a naughty girl tonight?"
Without waiting for an answer, Felix closed the door and strolled round the front of the car, peering mischievously over the top of his glasses in the light from the headlamps. Izzy felt a ripple of pure, wicked delight.
On the short drive to the restaurant, Felix's gaze kept wandering across to her legs. The third time, he spoke.
"I'm sorry, Miss Morgan, but that skirt is against regulations."
"Really, sir? What regulations are those?"
"The Silverman regulations. Rule number one: inspection. I have to make sure that all students' legs are up to the task ahead of them."
Izzy slipped out of her shoes and rested her bare feet on the dashboard. Slowly she teased her skirt up her leg with one finger, until the curving sweep of her thigh was exposed.
"So do these pass inspection, sir?"
"Oh my God--you're sensational," he said, his gaze fixed on Izzy's naked flesh. Then for a moment their eyes met, and they broke out in a fit of giggles.
"We're never going to make it to the restaurant if we carry on like this."
And suddenly the bookish law lecturer was back.
Over dinner, Felix was the model of good manners, respectful and attentive, but somehow more reserved in public, and Izzy found herself wanting to be alone with him again, to see if the man of mischief would emerge once more.
At the end of the meal, Felix reached across the table and laid a gentle hand on top of hers.
"Would you like a nightcap? Back at mine?"
Izzy enjoyed a moment of satisfaction and pleasure: he had made the first move after all.
"That would be lovely," she said.
