The Philippines is made up of more than 7,000 tropical islands in the southwest Pacific Ocean, the largest of which are Luzon and Mindanao. The islands are mountainous and volcanic; earthquakes are common. About half of the population are engaged in agriculture, and the balance are involved in manufacturing, mining, and other small industries.
