Excerpt from All I Need by Sally Painter
Frankie's dark stare shifted over her when he leaned forward and closed the gate behind them. The heavy metal slammed shut. She jerked around, trying to shake the foreboding sense she'd just entered a prison. Of course, that was ridiculous.
"Oh man! What an incredible night this is going to be." Amy squeezed her arm.
"What do you think, Dani?" Lillian turned to grin at her.
Her stare widened on the three-storied high ceiling, the ornately carved statues and the gilded furniture. Even the tables were massive wood with marble tops. But most alarming were the suspended cages where men and women held in bondage struggled against their chains and leather collars. Dark booths were more like beds with red velvet draperies fringed in gold--some open, but most closed, revealing teasing glimpses of couples. Women with leather thongs twisted and moved over men dressed in leather chaps, while others wore Speedos. Danielle tried to swallow past the dryness in her throat.
"I bet you've never been to a place like this," Minnie leaned in to whisper.
"You bet right." Rising heat fluttered over her. A part of her was shocked, even horrified by what she saw, while another part of her found it just so...very exciting.
"What do you think, Dani?" Minnie used her nickname and gestured to the room.
"I think I've been out of circulation way too long, if this is what the single scene is all about nowadays."
This seemed to amuse Minnie for a moment then she simply nodded and moved away from them, disappearing into the surging crowd.
"Well, I guess most of the people at work would be shocked by this place," Amy spoke above the pounding music.
"I daresay any normal person would be shocked." Lillian gestured to the corner of the room where Minnie now stood waving at them.
"We have a booth?" Amy asked. "Wow, this woman knows how to make people snap to attention."
"Yes, she does," Danielle murmured to herself, staring at a man across the room. He stood out from the crowd, mostly because of his handsome looks, but also because, unlike everyone else in this club, he wasn't wearing black. She followed her friends to the procured booth, casting a wistful look in his direction. His dark gray suit highlighted his broad shoulders and attempted to disguise his muscular arms. He wore a red and gray brocade vest with gold, embossed buttons. The final touch was a black tie with a gold tie chain.
His unrelenting gaze smoldered over her face, searing down the length of her neck to the low neckline of her birthday dress. Danielle tried to look away, but she was captive to his presence. She willed her legs to take her in the opposite direction of the booth, where he now appeared to be waiting for them. Waiting for her. Quickening heat pumped through her.
He tilted his head slightly and her pulse jumped. He was staring right at her with a slow grin parting his lips. Excited shivers raced down her spine tingling her nipples hard.
"That's Armonds!" Lillian grabbed her arm and squeezed. Amy pivoted to look at them with her eyes wide in an exaggerated expression of surprise.
"Oh my God! Do you see him?" Amy gasped. "Why is he watching us?"
Lillian looked past Amy then back to Danielle.
"He seems to be watching our birthday girl here."
Danielle recognized the name, Armonds. The owner of the club. Her knees weakened but she continued to walk toward him.
"Watching her? I'd say more like devouring her." Amy mouthed the words, lucky you.
"Come on," Lillian locked her arm through Danielle's.
"Please! Can we have a little bit of control, ladies?" She jerked free of her friends' arm locks. "You act as though I'm some kind of sacrifice to the guy."
"Sacrifice?" Lillian released her hold and flashed Amy a warning glare.
"Sorry, Dani," Amy relaxed the deathlike grip. "He's just the most eligible and desirable man ever. Other than that, he's nothing."
"You just don't understand, Dani. Amy has this big crush on him." Lillian sneered at the other woman.
"Oh, like you don't? Thing is, Dani, to have Armonds looking at you like that, I mean he's really interested in you. That's what all the women here are panting hot to have happen to them. You're just so lucky!" Amy literally trembled beside her.
"Amy, you have no shame. I swear, Dani, she's like some high school kid. Gets all hot around Armonds. She's impossible to work with. If she keeps it up, I'm going to ask for a transfer across the street to your building. I'm serious, all she talks about is Armonds this and Armonds that. I have to listen to her all day long. You're lucky you don't work in our building!"
"Oh, like you don't talk about him?" Amy pouted. "I saw the way you went after him last Saturday night, but he took that blonde up to his suite, didn't he? Not you, babe."
"My turn will come, Miss Amy. You're just jealous that he bought me a drink and hasn't once noticed you."
"Am not! And so what if he bought you a little piddling drink. He still left you down here staring into your vodka."
"Look, Amy, do you want to make this about last Saturday or are you going to let it be about Dani?" Lillian challenged with restrained anger edging her words.
"You're the one who started it by saying I had the hots for him," Amy defended.
"Well, honey, you do," Lillian jeered.
Danielle stared at them unable to believe what she was hearing.
"Whoa!" She finally interrupted them. "Just what's wrong with y'all? You've never talked to each other like this. Ever since you first came to this place, you both act...well, different. Is there something I should know before we go any further?"
"That's her," Minnie slipped her hand around the column of the booth and leaned toward him.
"I know," Armonds spoke, not daring to break his stare. He gauged Danielle Rivers to be about five-eight, and lithe, but very voluptuous with well-rounded hips, a small waist and larger than average breasts.
"They're real," Minnie spoke and shifted to stand beside him. "I can tell."
He ignored her, keeping Danielle's gaze locked to his. He watched the way her hips swung ever so slightly, teasing him with their unconscious rhythm. Something he'd not felt for several months stoked to life--desire.
"Do you feel resurrected?" she asked and once more he ignored her.
Danielle Rivers was irresistible. From her dark brown, long, silky hair and deep chocolate eyes to her full lips, currently pursed in a tense, uncertain expression, she was the woman he sought. If he must marry to save himself from the curse, then this woman would do nicely.
"She's lovely." He watched her move closer.
