Bongeni is the story of a young Zulu boy who has to flee from his home in Zululand when his father is killed in a tribal battle. The setting is over a hundred years ago during the Anglo-Boer war period in South Africa. Bongeni is entrusted with a sacred half lion's tooth which he has to deliver to an Uncle in Port Shepstone who holds the other half. The future of the Zulu nation depends on the two halfs of the tooth being united. On Bongeni's journey he meets up with three friends - A young Boer, an American and an Irish lass. Together they get caught up in the Anglo-Boer war. They endure many adventures but finally triumph. Their aggressor is a British Luitenant who pursues them relentlessly. A love triangle develops between the Irish lass, the Boer and the American that is only revealed on the final page.
