Excerpt from Spanish Topaz by Regina Carlysle
Gracie twitched in his arms and he saw her gaze leave him and center on the dagger that lay glinting in the middle of the floor. A sizzling sound came from the ancient weapon and white curls of smoke begin to rise up and swirl around like wicked fingers. Foggy mists rose higher and higher, blotting out the light from the moon. Hell, it blotted out everything.
Cash couldn't speak. He stood and placed Gracie on her feet. What was happening? Held in awe of the scene unfolding before his disbelieving eyes, he protectively wrapped her up in his arms. His body tensed, waiting.
Gracie stiffened suddenly and cried out in an anguished voice, reaching toward the encircling smoke. "Miguel! Miguel mi amore!"
Once again, not Gracie's voice.
Some unseen, unwanted force had taken his sweet woman and replaced her with someone else!
Suddenly the heavy mists began to clear. In the center of the floor the topaz gems shone brightly as if lit from within by golden fires. Cash cursed as the image of a man tore free from the wispy smoke and took two shaky steps toward them.
He was easily as tall as Cash himself. At least six feet two of brawn and muscle. The apparition wore a silver helmet on his head along with the heavy armored breastplate of a conquistador from ancient Spain. Cash had seen pictures of the Spanish explorers all of his life and knew they'd come on their ships in search of adventure and riches.
But what the bloody hell was a conquistador doing standing in his damn bedroom with an ancient topaz dagger lying at his feet.
