Excerpt from Shewolf by Myla Jackson
Her partner rested a hand on her elbow and they crossed the floor toward the bar. Before they'd gone ten steps, the man she'd been dancing with before stepped in front of them. "My turn."
The hand on her elbow tightened and her escort said, "Not in this lifetime."
His territorial tone should have annoyed her. For a moment he sounded very much like one of her brothers. But the pressure on her arm felt warm and sexy. In fact she could think about a lot of other areas it would feel even better.
The other man frowned, his arms crossing over his chest. "Can't the lady answer for herself?"
Lyka rolled her eyes. "Yes, I can speak for myself, and no I don't want to dance with you."
Expecting to hear the man at her side make a snide remark, Lyka was pleased when he only smiled. At least he didn't push the point and start a fight. Fighting was something best saved for life and death situations. Like stopping the war between the Draco Pack and the Lobos de Diablo? A twinge of guilt threatened to milk the exhilaration out of the moment. Lyka reminded herself tonight was her choice. If she was fortunate enough to find her mate, fabulous. If not, at least she chose her lover for one night.
The sexy hunk next to her steered her toward an unlit doorway. "I have a quieter place in the back where we can talk. Do you mind?"
For a split second, she hesitated and then squashed the ingrained caution and went with her instincts. "Okay." A thrill of excitement raced trough her at the chance to get him alone. Then a thought struck her, and she laughed out loud. "I'm about to enter the lion's den for all I know, and I don't even know your name."
