Lackey, who has enchanted readers since the publication of her first novel, Arrows of the Queen in 1987, scores another hit with the paperback release of the first book in an exciting new series. High magic had been lost to Valdemar when he gave his life to save his kingdom from destruction by the dark sorceries. Now it falls to Elspeth Herald, heir to the throne, to take up the challenge and seek a mentor who will awaken her mage abilities.
First of a new trilogy, Lackey's fantasy novel, again set in the imperiled magical realm of Valdemar, features strong and believable men, women and creatures.

1 . Great start!
Posted November 21, 2010 by Ruthie , San Diego, CAMercedes Lackey has always been one of my favorite authors. Not only do her primary characters have strong development in this book, so do her secondary characters. She creates a world that is easy for the mind to slip into, and stay for awhile. I love the world of V aldemar, and can't wait to read the next book!
