Twelve-year-old Joe Taylor saw his mother and sister killed because of the war. His father may still be alive somewhere in Virginia fighting in General Lee's army. Joe will have to trek 600 miles from Arkansas to the Shenandoah Valley through the bloody and desperate Confederate South. He has no choice: He will go. But not alone; he has his friend Peter, a free black, who will always stand by Joe.
