A big novel about a small town...
When Barry Fairbrother dies in his early forties, the town of Pagford is left in shock.
Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty façade is a town at war.
Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils...Pagford is not what it first seems.
And the empty seat left by Barry on the parish council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen. Who will triumph in an election fraught with passion, duplicity, and unexpected revelations?
A big novel about a small town, The Casual Vacancy is J.K. Rowling's first novel for adults. It is the work of a storyteller like no other.

2 . Great adult read
Posted November 19, 2012 by KaraMe , EdmontonI really liked this book. It lifts the cover off life in a small town and shows the true underbelly of people and their agendas. I know each of those characters in my own town. You can feel Rawling's anger and disappointment in this read.

Completely different. I only got through the first 100 pages before changing to another title.
5 . Disappointing read
Posted October 26, 2012 by Deb M. , CalgaryThe content of the book was disappointing because it was so totally uneventful and uninteresting. A real snooze. Was there a plot? Was there a message? Didn't seem so - just a waste of good reading time.
6 . Different story, same excellence
Posted October 19, 2012 by Peter , Lake WorthThis was a drastic step in a direction away from the Harry Potter series, and it was done brilliantly. The Casual Vacancy is painted with vivid imagery in regards to people's mannerisms, vernacular, thought, and action--in short, it is exceedingly real. So too is the gradual snowballing of events that lead to the story's climax; none of it seems farfetched or unnatural. From the get-go, I could not put this book down. As far as I am concerned, Rowling's manner of storytelling is excellent, regardless of the age of intended audience.
7 . Do not bother
