The fear of being buried alive was common in the nineteenth century. Edgar Allan Poe dramatized this fear in The Premature Burial. The main character suffers from a condition that causes him to fall into a deathlike state. Because of this, he is consumed by a fear of being buried alive and takes numerous precautions against it.
