This novel in its classical gothic style involves the legend of a monstrous hound that haunts the moor around Baskerville Hall. Doyle is quite effective at evoking the bleakness of the moor. The dark aura of the setting is magnified by the folkloric evil of Hugo Baskerville: the ancestor whose sins are purported to have brought the curse of the hound upon his descendants. Captivating!
