He never spoke of it when he lived, but it was the same as when I scorched the rice porridge, or when I came home with the traps empty and dangling in my hands; the silent disappointment shone clear in his eyes. Now that he was dead, I didn't have to bear the heaviness of his frown or the disapproving shake of his head, but that brought no surcease. His ghost whispered in my ear, poisonous words that had no place in a harmonious household. "Ayame, your tears are as welcome to me as a drunkard's spittle," his ghost hissed. "What a sniveling weakling you have become." The hem of my mourning-white kimono lifted, brushed by fingers of heat from Grandfather's funeral pyre. The ash spun into the air, stinging my face and blinding me, as a counterpoint to the ghostly tirade. I didn't think less of Grandfather for his ghost's cruel outburst. The dead, after all, were renowned for their lack of decorum.
