More > Rabbit crouched in a corner, unseen, as the men in the orange jumpsuits slammed their fists into the bad man. She preened her ears as a heavy foot dislocated the bad man's kneecap and twitched her whiskers when the bad man screamed in pain. His shrieks seemed to encourage the other men to greater excesses of violence. Blood splattered the dingy white walls. A second joined it, and then the jagged muzzle, thick shoulders, and burly haunches of Bear entered the cell. The men continued their sport. Rabbit raised a paw and sketched in the air. She left behind sparkling trails of words in an archaic script older than memory. Bear could read them for he, like Rabbit, remembered a time when the stars moved in a different dance and the mountains were young.
