Overview

Written by Greek standards as a short epic poem, Rhodius tells a less violent early version of the tragic hero Jason, his love affair with Medea and his pursuit of the golden fleece.

Bio of Apollonius Rhodius

He was of Alexandria by birth, lived in the time of the Ptolemies, and was a pupil of Callimachus. Apollonius was a contemporary of Eratosthenes, Euphorion and Timarchus. In Alexandria, he composed and publically recited the "Argonautica"; the poem was condemned. He then went to Rhodes where he revised the poem and recited it successfully. Thereafter he called himself a Rhodian.
