  • 1.4 stars out of 5Just the facts ma'am.

It's a pleasure to be able to download a plain-text (albeit with photos) version of the New York Times. It's without frills but very easy to read on my iPad and iPhone in BlueFire Reader (and there's always the handy table of contents). The main reason for the 4 star review, though? I am so happy to find a company that is willing and able to sell me single copies of the New York Times without making me commit to a monthly subscription! My one complaint is that I wish Sony didn't make me use the proprietary Reader software on my computer to purchase from their site. I bet I'd buy a lot more stuff if I could just use a regular web browser.
  • 2.5 stars out of 5Great implementation ot NY Times

Posted May 09, 2011 by Doug, Minnespoolis Area

I recently switched from a Kindle 3 to a Sony 950 because of quality issues I was having with multiple Kindles. As an old 505 user, I forgot what I was missing.

The NY Times on the 950 is really a pleasure to read. Having the touch screen ability to maneuver between sections and articles is great. The paper is delivered very early in the morning so I've not had any issues waiting for it. I really like the way periodicals, in general, are handled with the reader.

This newpaper is decent. Wanted to hear more about world news and important leaders and issues. Had a few interesting stories but not enough for me to keep my subscription
  • 4.4 stars out of 5Great-but with issues

I always enjoy reading the Sunday New York Times, but never subscribed. I would buy at the news stand, where I could find it. Now I don't have to worry about the papers being sold-out before I get there. I have the pleasure of reading the paper when I want without worrying of recycling all the pages-and it is much easier to read on road.

One major knock I have is when there are any graphics with a story they can be hard to read, no matter how much you enlarge it. Photos aren't great reproductions-but acceptable. Downloads appear to have improved. Content is easy to get through. I did have issues with some of the navigation elements early on, but those appear to have been dealt with.

Regarding the magazine section, if you are use to the magazine format, with photos and layout, and are looking for that, then buy the magazine. You'll only get the articles with the Reader.

Overall a great read. But if you're looking for puzzles and inactives you'll be disappointed.

Did I do something wrong?? Where's the puzzle? I like it but I really want the puzzle, too.
  • 6.5 stars out of 5Sunday Times

I got the Sunday Times and was pleasantly surprised. Easy to read .. and I kept it with me and read it through the week.
  • 7.5 stars out of 5out of the lower 48, but never out of the loop

I am currently serving on a remote base on an island in the alutian islands (Alaska). They do not sell a national newspaper here, and the local periodical is not very engaged in national issues.
I have grown to realy on the New York Times on my E Reader to stay plugged in, even when I happen to get underway for a couple of days. as far as a convenience, its beyond scope, and as far as morale, this seriouusly helps me maintain my sanity.
Great daily. get it every time I have the opportunity to get internet access.
  • 8.4 stars out of 5I liked it but there is one big problem easily fixed!

Posted March 16, 2010 by Hoving, NYC

This is so much better than the Kindle version, hands down. One issue that I can not love with is why in the hell do they have to bold headlines on the front page.

You can not see them first of all, and it makes reading them and navigation just horribly difficult, and coupled with the fact that Sony insists on this touch screen technology that creates such a glare no matter how you position it, I wonder sometimes why I continue to support them.

Well, not for long i have ordered and ipad.
  • 9.5 stars out of 5Digital newspapers are great.

Posted March 14, 2010 by Jim Milligan, Evansville, IN

I'm not even sure where i could find the new york times in evansville and even if i did it would be more than 75 cents. I wish there were more newspapers available this way. I currently don't subscribe to any newspapers delivered the old, paper way. I'd subscribe to several if I could get them digital
  • 10.2 stars out of 5Would be much better if it wasn't yesterday's issue...

Posted February 28, 2010 by Robert Pawlak, Vienna, VA

Formatting and navigation of the paper is good. It's easy to move around and find the information you want. The problem is that when you order a single issue (as many are wont to do), you will get yesterday's paper. This Sunday (2/28/10), I downloaded the paper at about 8AM. Everything went smoothly until I opened the paper, and discovered that it was Saturday's (!). So two stars - I think this would be 4 or 5 stars if the paper would be the current day's issue.
