Spirit Thorn: A Tale of Parallel Worlds
Overview
Do parallel worlds exist? Searching for proof, Professors Rodger & Cassie Swift vanish. Kestrelle, a spirit girl claiming to know their fate, tells their son Braden he must brave a whitewater, tooth-sprouting river into a land where wise vultures predict the future and blue minds inhabit lava caves. Only two powers can help: Kestrelle's Blood Thorn and Braden's vine-painted guitar. (For All Ages)

A Rich and Compelling TalePosted May 19, 2011 by D Schaff., Ashland, OR
Spirit Thorn is one of those gems we are privileged to stumble upon. The characters are rich, the storyline (after a bit of a slow start) is exciting and compelling. Humor and deep thought intertwine throughout. The parallel world--just a hair's-breadth distant from our own--is real and believable. Molly Greenfingers, the good-hearted monster (who just might swallow you whole) is unique in fiction. The ethical and philosophical implications are profound. I grew up on the fantasy work of C.S. Lewis (Narnia) and Tolkien (Hobbit and Lord of the Rings), then sampled sci-fi via Madeleine L'Engle (A Wrinkle in Time) -- books where young people are the heroes, and their coming-of-age quests are real and palpable. In my opinion, Spirit Thorn could join the ranks of these classics.
