The original from Terry Brooks. Solid fantasy story line. Brooks develops characters well. He tries to stir up the genre by having the magic involved be more subtle.

  • 5 stars out of 5A rare treat in the fantacy world

The sword of shannara trilogy the first three of many books that Terry Brooks has written. The writing style is light and easy going, filling in only enough discription to let you mind do the rest. The characters are not perfect or all powerful which makes them all the more interesting as they deal with their flaws and short commings in the use of magic or the lack of. in this reviewers opinion Terry Brooks is the best living fantacy author. Get ready to enjoy these books like you havent in a long time.

  • 2 stars out of 5Passable Epic Fantasy

Generally, this book is over praised.

While it does tell an epic story, it isn't nearly as innovative or rich as many people seem to think it is. The similarities to Tolkiens Lord of the Rings series are frequent, and the actual writing tends to be heavy handed and clunky in some places.

Some say that it's unfair to compare the two trilogies side by side, but the influence that the Lord of the Rings had on Terry Brooks is apparent in both the pacing of the story, and even moreso in the characters.

For instance, the parallels between Allanon the Druid and Gandalf the Grey are clearly there. Both characters are grumpy, stern magicians who are burdened by their need to rest the fate of the world on the shoulders of the young, unassuming hero to be.
That isn't to say that the books are horrible. The story a couple unique points, and the characters are relatively well rounded. I would definately suggest this series to a younger reader who is just getting into the epic fantasy genre, or who doesn't have the patience for Tolkiens slower stylings, but would think twice about suggesting it to seasoned fans of the genre, especially if they had recently read the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
