Overview

FIRST IN THE GUILD HUNTER SERIES from "a major new talent" (CHRISTINE FEEHAN).

Nalini Singh introduces readers to a world of beauty and bloodlust, where angels hold sway over vampires.

Vampire hunter Elena Deveraux is hired by the dangerously beautiful Archangel Raphael. But this time, it's not a wayward vamp she has to track. It's an archangel gone bad.

The job will put Elena in the midst of a killing spree like no other--and pull her to the razor's edge of passion. Even if the hunt doesn't destroy her, succumbing to Raphael's seductive touch just may. For when archangels play, mortals break.

This was very different from other Nalini Singh books and I was unsure as I started to read it, but it turned out to be a very good book. I look forward to further books in this series.

  • 5 stars out of 5A Vamire Huntress on a mission for an Archangel--a sexy parnormal romance/urban fantasy

Posted March 20, 2009 by Mirtika, Miami, FL

Elena Deveraux is a vampire hunter. She's tough, alienated from her kin, but has developed close bonds with fellow hunters in the guild. Her ability to track vampires is unmatched. So, when an archangel goes mad and rogue, the archangel Raphael, whose seat of power is in Manhattan, engages Elena to find the bloodlusting angel.

The fate of civilization, naturally, is in the balance. And so are the hearts of the archangel and the vampire hunter.

The angels in this novel are not Judeo-Christian angels, per se. They are more like Greco-Roman gods--they can be petty, vain, lustful, power-hungry, easily offended, vindictive, and they can go utterly insane. But like our typical idea of angels, they are beautiful and winged and very, very powerful.

This is a mixture of paranormal romantic suspense and urban fantasy, and the SF elements are about equally balanced with the romance ones. The conventions of the two genres are there--urban setting, steamy conversations and sex scenes, woman in peril, sometimes that peril coming from the very man who is both protector and would-be lover. If you've read Anne Stuart or Linda Howard, that's the sort of alpha male Raphael is, plus the supernatural powers. If you've read vampire hunter/slayer type books, you get an idea of how Elena is.

The worldbuilding is nifty. I wish there had been less sexy stuff and more of the angel/vampire/guild world.

But this is a page turner of a thrilling read.
