Overview

USAF Lieutenant Samantha Spade and her techies try out the latest gizmos for the military. On a test run with the Ergonomic Exoskeletal Extension (EEEK), Sam stumbles over two dead bodies in the desert. With the help of handsome Border Patrol Agent Jeff Mitchell, Sam must unravel a cover-up involving an illegal arms deal.

Samantha, a smart-mouthed air force lieutenant, tests gadgets for the military at a Texas desert facility. On an early morning hike, Samantha finds two badly decomposed bodies, soon identified as a weapons dealer and a smuggler of illegal aliens. After an arsonist burns her test lab, Samantha ratchets up her involvement in the investigation, with handsome border patrol agent Jeff "Mitch" Mitchell keeping her heart racing as they search for the killer. Well paced, this chatty first-person narrative develops the character of the not-so-military-type heroine who doesn't deal well with authority figures but does the best she can because she knows her job's important. Crime fans will look forward to Lt. Spade's next adventure. (Nov.)

Bio of Merline Lovelace

Daughter of a career air force veteran, Merline Lovelace grew up at bases all over the world. Living in Newfoundland and France and almost half of the fifty states as a child sparked a lifelong love of travel she continues to indulge to this day. A Woodrow Wilson scholar, she graduated magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, from Ripon College, WI, with honors in German and Russian. She also studied Mandarin Chinese at Princeton University and Middlebury College, VT; earned a masters from Troy State University, AL; and attended Harvard's Kennedy School of Government. During her twenty-three year military career, Colonel Lovelace served tours in Taiwan, in Vietnam, and at the Pentagon with the Joint Chiefs of Staff. She commanded Eglin Air Force Base, the biggest and best base in the air force, and is a distinguished graduate of Squadron Officers' School, the Armed Forces Staff College and the Air War College. Her many military awards and decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Force Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster and the Bronze Star. When she hung up her uniform for the last time, Colonel Lovelace decided to combine her love of adventure with a flair for storytelling, basing many of her tales on her experiences in the service. Since then, she's produced one action-packed sizzler after another. She now has sixty published novels to her credit, many of which have made USA TODAY and Waldenbooks bestseller lists. Over eight million copies of her works are in print in thirty countries. Merline's novels have won numerous honors, including the Romance Writers of America's prestigious RITA Award -- the Oscar of the publishing world.
