The editors at HarperCollins invite you to submit a short story about a character who has to face the "real world" for the first time. The story must involve a single, life-changing event. First prize is the opportunity to be published alongside your favorite authors in the paperback edition of the No Such Thing as the Real World collection. All stories must be between 5,000 and 10,000 words long, and all contributing authors must be between fourteen and nineteen years old.

Bio of M. T. Anderson

M. T. Anderson is the critically acclaimed author of many picture books and novels, including Feed, which was a National Book Award finalist, and The Astonishing Life of Octavian Nothing,, Traitor to the Nation, Volume 1: The Pox Party, which won a National Book Award and was a Michael L. Printz Honor Book.

Bio of Chris Lynch

Chris Lynch is the Printz Honor-winning author of Freewill and other highly acclaimed young adult novels, including Gold Dust, Iceman, Gypsy Davey, and Shadow Boxer, all ALA Best Books for Young Adults. He is also the author of Extreme Elvin, Whitechurch, and All the Old Haunts. Lynch holds an M.A. degree from the writing program at Emerson College. He lives in Scotland, and continues to work on new literary projects.

Bio of Jacqueline Woodson

Born on February 12th in Columbus, Ohio, Jacqueline Woodson grew up in Greenville, South Carolina, and Brooklyn, New York and graduated from college with a B.A. in English. She now writes full-time and has recently received the Margaret A. Edwards Award for lifetime achievement in writing for young adults. Her other awards include a Newbery Honor, two Coretta Scott King awards, two National Book Award finalists, and the Los Angeles Times Book Prize. Although she spends most of her time writing, Woodson also enjoys reading the works of emerging writers and encouraging young people to write, spending time with her friends and her family, and sewing. Jacqueline Woodson currently resides in Brooklyn, New York.

Bio of K. L. Going

K. L. Going lives in the Hudson Valley area of New York State. Since graduating from college she has worked as an adult literacy tutor, a ticket agent for a major airline, a front desk clerk at a resort hotel, and an assistant in a Manhattan literary agency. She has lived in Maine, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Louisiana and New York. Fat Kid Rules the World, a YALSA Michael L. Printz honor book, is her first novel.

Bio of An Na

An Na's first novel, A Step From Heaven, won the Michael L. Printz Award and was a National Book Award finalist. She is also the author of The Fold and Wait For Me, which was an ALA Best Book for Young Adults.

Bio of Beth Kephart

Beth Kephart is the author of 10 books, including the National Book Award finalist A Slant of Sun; the Book Sense pick Ghosts in the Garden; the autobiography of Philadelphia's Schuylkill River, Flow; the acclaimed business fable Zenobia; and the critically acclaimed novels for young adults, Undercover and House of Dance. A third YA novel, Nothing but Ghosts, is due out in June 2009. And a fourth young adult novel, The Heart Is Not a Size, will be released in March 2010. "The Longest Distance," a short story, appears in the May 2009 HarperTeen anthology, No Such Thing as the Real World. Kephart is a winner of the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts fiction grant, a National Endowment for the Arts grant, a Leeway grant, a Pew Fellowships in the Arts grant, and the Speakeasy Poetry Prize, among other honors. Kephart's essays are frequently anthologized, she has judged numerous competitions, and she has taught workshops at many institutions, to all ages. In the fall of 2009, Kephart will teach the advanced nonfiction workshop at the University of Pennsylvania. Kephart is the strategic writing partner in the award-winning boutique communications firm, Fusion Communications.
