Posted September 24, 2009 by Meg, Frankfort, KY

I love to cook, and I especially love to make 'comfort foods' like stews and mac n' cheese. I am also a big fan of the Idiot's guides and find the titles misleading. Honestly, I've never purchased one of these guides that wasn't great. The tips and recipes in this book are excellent. Especially try the crab cakes, cookies, and baked macaroni and cheese! I was looking for a good basic book of comfort foods to use in the winter time and this fulfilled that need. However, do be warned that just because they are traditional comfort food recipes that does not mean that they are all simple. Some can be pretty complex but the book has a good variety and does give you good advice to help you through the more difficult recipes. All meals are covered from breakfast through dinner plus snacks and desserts. Also note that this book is not diet friendly. This is comfort food so you've got plenty of cheese and butter and all things bad for you in many of these recipes. (Just watch those portion sizes.) I am still trying new recipes from this book but must take a moment to recommend the crab cakes as the best I have found in a printed cook book and to praise the biscuits and sausage gravy.
