Overview

Anna Karenina has been described as the perfect Russian novel. Trapped in a loveless marriage, Anna Karenina is defenceless against the power of her passions once they are unleashed by the adoration of Count Vronsky. Having defied the rules of nineteenth-century Russian society, Anna is forced to pay a heavy price. Human nature, with all its failings, is the fabric of which this great and passionate work is composed.

Bio of Leo Tolstoy

Count Leo Tolstoy was born on September 9, 1828, in Yasnaya Polyana, Russia. Orphaned at nine, he was brought up by an elderly aunt and educated by French tutors until he matriculated at Kazan University in 1844. In 1847, he gave up his studies and, after several aimless years, volunteered for military duty in the army, serving as a junior officer in the Crimean War before retiring in 1857. In 1862, Tolstoy married Sophie Behrs, a marriage that was to become, for him, bitterly unhappy. His diary, started in 1847, was used for self-study and self-criticism; it served as the source from which he drew much of the material that appeared not only in his great novels War and Peace (1869) and Anna Karenina (1877), but also in his shorter works. Seeking religious justification for his life, Tolstoy evolved a new Christianity based upon his own interpretation of the Gospels. Yasnaya Polyana became a mecca for his many converts At the age of eighty-two, while away from home, the writer suffered a break down in his health in Astapovo, Riazan, and he died there on November 20, 1910.

  • 3 stars out of 5Nice Story

It took me a while to get into this story. This classic story started off slow, but picked up the pace and once I got into it--well, then I couldn't put it down. Overall, the book is long, but well worth the effort to complete.

Should be a prerequisite for ladies entering university life.

  • 3 stars out of 5Still cringing...

Posted May 29, 2009 by Dawn, St. Louis, MO

This is a well written story; actually several love stories intertwined. I had a very difficult time with the subject matter. I am not much on affairs... no matter how much the "heart" plays into the situation, choices are made, people pay the price. In that, I appreciated the book. I just cringed throughout most of it and would have shut my eyes if it weren't for the fact that I needed them to read! Ha!
