Overview

Kevin J. Anderson, award-winning New York Times bestselling coauthor of Dune: House Atreides and Star Wars: Darksaber, presents a thrilling new space epic: a vast panorama of far-flung civilizations, interstellar terrorism, and galaxy-spanning war...

Having colonized the worlds of the spiral arm, mankind's three branches-the Terran Hansa, starship-dwelling Roamers, and telepathic Green Priests-are certain the galaxy is theirs for the taking. But when scientists successfully test a device that transforms gas giant planets into new suns, humanity soon discovers the brutal, horrifying price of arrogance in deep space. For Jovian planets are the homeworlds of an undreamt of alien species, the hydrogues. Infinitely advanced, supremely powerful, and now the victims of accidental genocide, the hydrogues don't seek apologies or reparations. Instead, incredible armadas of invincible, city-sized warships suddenly emerge from the galaxy's billions of gaseous worlds with a single mission-annihilate every last human being in the universe...

Editorial Reviews

In this stellar launch of a new series, bestseller Anderson (Dune spinoffs with Brian Herbert; X-Files and Star Wars books) delivers action, engaging characters and credible fantastic worlds in spades or ekti, the fuel vital for spaceships in the year 2427. The Terran Hanseatic League, in a heady rush of manifest destiny, turns Oncier, a huge gas planet, into a sun so its four moons can be used for colonization. In the process, the Terrans disturb the ancient but dwindling Ildirans, their uneasy allies, whose leader, the Mage-Imperator, suspects that Terrans are far too eager to take over the spiral arm. Still worse, by inadvertently destroying Oncier's hitherto unknown colonists, the powerful hydrogues, the conversion of Oncier sets off a catastrophic conflict that threatens the existence of all Terrans and Ildirans. The Earth Defense Forces of the Terran Hanseatic League, the Worldtrees and Green Priests of Theroc, the gypsy Roamers who mine ekti all must unite with the Ildirans to fight the alien menace. Book one sizzles with a fast-moving plot woven tightly with vivid characterizations: the space cowboys Jess, Ross and Tasia Tamblyn; the exotic Ildirans; the grotesque Mage-Imperator and his handsome Prime Designate son, Jora'h; Beneto Theron, his clan and the bewitching Nira Khali; the appealing and not-so-appealing humans, Raymond/Peter and Chairman Basil Wenceslas; and many others, all conspiring to make this fascinating future epic one not to be missed.

At first the writing approach was hard to follow as I tried to anticipate the connection between characters. Each chapter focuses on one of the characters story line. Each chapter picks up a new peice of a different characters story. After finishing a chapter sometimes I wanted to jump ahead and find the next chapter about that character. I didn't because I'm anticipating it will all come together at some point and I don't want to miss connections between characters by skipping ahead.

Aside from the writing style taking a bit of getting use to, the story lines kept my interest and was fun escapest reading with different cultures, points of views on shared events, economy in space.
