Overview

The first part, titled Letters, contains essays on such topics as Books, Henry James, Alphonse Daudet, Guy de Maupassant, Anatole France, Turgenev, Stephen Crane, Tales of the Sea, An Observer in Malaya, The Life Beyond, and The Censor of Plays. The second part, titled Life, includes such topics as Autocracy and War, The Crime of Partition, Note on the Polish Problem, Tradition, Confidence, Flight, Some Reflections on the Loss of the Titanic, Protection of Ocean Liners, and A Friendly Place. Joseph Conrad was a Polish-born English novelist best known in his own time as a writer of sea stories. He is now more admired as a novelist of moral exploration and a master of narrative technique - a major 20th century novelist.

Bio of Joseph Conrad

A Polish novelist, considered as one of the greatest contemporary English writers. He was brought up in Russian-occupied Poland. His father, an impoverished aristocrat, a writer, and a militant fighter, was arrested by the occupying regime for his patriotic activities, and was sentenced to penal servitude in Siberia. Shortly after this, his mother died of tuberculosis in exile, and despite his being allowed to return to Cracow, so did his father four years later. Subsequently Conrad was brought up by his uncle. Conrad abandoned his education at the age of 17 to become a seaman in the French merchant navy. He lived an adventurous, buccaneering life -- sailing off Marseilles and becoming involved in gunrunning and political conspiracy. In 1878, after an unsuccessful attempt at committing suicide, Joseph took service on a British ship in order to avoid French military service. He gained his Master Mariner's certificate, learned English before the age of 21, to finally become a naturalized Briton in 1884. He lived in Lowestoft, Suffolk, and later near Canterbury, Kent.
