Author Information
Bio of Jeanine Berry
Words are Jeanine Berry ' s passion. Perhaps it is genetic since she comes from a family of writers. An avid reader all her life, she started scratching pen to paper at an early age. Once she learned to type, she kept her family awake late at night with the clicking of keys. Eventually, she left home, studied English and journalism and went on to a career as a journalist. The hard-charging, deadline-driven world of journalism left her little time for her own writing. But the desire to put her fantasy worlds down on paper in novel form never left her. When the Internet was born, she was hooked by the idea of ebooks. She dug out one of her old manuscripts from long ago, polished it up and sent it in to an epublisher. Her creative writing career was soon launched. She is now the author of three fantasy novels, and three SF novels, as well as a contributor to two anthologies. Dayspring Destiny, the final book of her Dayspring series, took the 2004 Eppie for best fantasy novel. Jeanine lives in the Chicago area with her husband and two very spoiled Australian Silky Terriers.

Bio of Lazette Gifford
On the day Lazette was born The Muses wept, mostly because they knew that one of them would have no rest for a long time. The Graces, always anxious to be certain their poor cousins had enough to do, dropped off the notice themselves. When The Muses saw the snippets of the future, they quailed at the work ahead. The Graces smirked, and quickly left before they were coerced into a new little project like that one that had somehow mutated into the Renaissance. The most difficult decision remaining to The Muses turned out to be which of them would take up the challenge of the little insomniac with far too much imagination. When they turned to Aoede, she pointed out that a new age of music had barely begun, and she already had her hands full preparing Elvis and Ringo. Erato, Euterpe, and Terpsichore -- who had all been rather disdainful of Rock and Roll until now -- suddenly found a true and abiding interest in it, and threw themselves into the work with Aoede before someone suggested that one of them take the problem child. They thought Calliope, being the oldest might stand a chance, but she (rather too quickly, the others thought) pointed out that the age of Epic Poetry was in abeyance, and it would hardly be fair to start a baby along that path. They almost argued... but Calliope always had the last word. Epic poets were like that. Clio waved them away and went back to the proliferation of post-war historians, and the others decided maybe she had more than enough already. Melete and Mneme took their cues from Earato, Euepre and Terpischore and decided that history needed all the help it could get. And that left Melpomene, who began to wail as soon as they turned to her -- but then she, being the muse of Tragedy, tended to do that quite often anyway. When the others pressed her anyway, she began to panic until she spotted her sister, Polymnia, busy with quill and paper, and so immersed in her work that she never even noticed the ruckus around her. Melphomene rushed to her side and put a hand on Polymnia ' s shoulder. "What now " Polymnia demanded, looking at Mel with utter exasperation. "I ' m in the middle of a scene! Why is it I can ' t get two pages written without some interruption For the love of the Gods, don ' t you eight have anything better to do than bother me " "We have a problem," Calliope said, barely able to hide a malicious grin. She ' d been waiting for the moment to get even ever since prose replaced poetry as the favored form, and now she knew she had her chance. "We ' ve been handed a child who needs a muse. We ' re all so busy, Poly. Maybe you... " "Yes, yes, fine. Just put the name in with the others." And she went back to writing, and sealed the baby ' s fate, as well as those of several poor, unsuspecting keyboards.

Beauty Within the Briars
By Rie Sheridan
Long before history, in a far away land of mist and legend, there stood a high hill clothed in an emerald greensward. Atop this lofty height loomed a circular tower of finest ivory, rising into the sky like a slender spindle from the ruins of a mighty castle....
Once, the castle had been the fortress stronghold of a powerful king, who ruled the land as far as eye could see, and fifty leagues beyond in all directions.
One thing only did this great king lack -- and that was an heir to his fortunes. His faithful lady, in her despair, turned to the dark arts to quicken a child within her. She struck a wicked bargain with the cruel queen of the fey, who dwelt within a hollow tree deep inside the forest beside the lake circling the base of the hill.
The king's lady would have her babe -- and, in return, would bear as well a second for the faery, who could not conceive her own. Desperate beyond sense, the queen accepted the terms....
* * *
In the full course of time, the lady queen came to be delivered in secret within the humble cottage of a woodcutter whose goodwife served the fey. Two babes did the good queen bear in due course. One was a tiny, dark-crowned son with eyes of stormy gray and a solemn soul -- destined to be her own true heir. The other was a beautiful, flaxen-haired daughter with merry blue eyes and a smile like sunbeams -- intended for the witch.
The queen's heart was stolen by her girl-child's laugh... though she had bargained fair for a son. She left the prince behind, and stole away the princess, naming her "Beauty" -- for that she was -- and she raised her in the sunlight.
