Overview
In the shadows of the night in Caldwell, New York, there's a deadly war raging between vampires and their slayers. And there exists a secret band of brothers like no other--six vampire warriors, defenders of their race. And now, a dutiful twin must choose between two lives...
Fiercely loyal to the Black Dagger Brotherhood, Phury has sacrificed himself for the good of the race, becoming the male responsible for keeping the Brotherhood's bloodlines alive. As Primale of the Chosen, he is to father the sons and daughters who will ensure that the traditions of the race survive and that there are warriors to fight those who want all vampires extinguished.
As his first mate, the Chosen Cormia wants to win not only his body but his heart for herself- she sees the emotionally scarred male behind all his noble responsibility. But while the war with the Lessening Society grows more grim, and tragedy looms over the Brotherhood's mansion, Phury must decide between duty and love.
Editorial Reviews
Wards's terrific latest picks up the Black Dagger Brotherhood of vampires where Lover Unbound left off. Phury, a sworn Brother who has also become the Primale, is wrestling with a destiny he doesn't want, an addiction he can't handle and an insurmountable feeling of inadequacy that bleeds over into his love for Cormia, his Chosen First Mate. He holes up at the Brotherhood's rural New York base. The Omega, bent on destroying the vampire race, is meanwhile growing ever stronger, and his long-held plan to destroy the Brothers, via the Lessening Society, is coming to fruition. Younger Brotherhood trainees John Matthew, Qhuinn and Blaylock are learning what it means to come of age and are immersed in their own drama with Qhuinn's malicious cousin, Lash. The stories all reach a shared climax, leading to explosive revelations that set up the next book beautifully. Focusing less on Phury and Cormia and more on the Omega's plot amps the tension on all sides. A subplot involving Rhevenge, John Matthew and the female symphath Xhex is particularly exciting, with Ward diving into varied subspecies, sexual predilections and questions of identity. Ward has outdone herself with this latest Brotherhood novel. (June) Copyright 2008 Reed Business Information.

Lover EnshrinedPosted June 20, 2008 by Emptrix, Seattle
A huge disappointment after the previous books. I am still waiting for Phury's love story! J.R. Ward bit too much off for this book, and has indeed taken a new direction as was promised. However, I won't be following her anymore. What happened to The Brotherhood? They are for the most part MIA. Worst book of the entire series and the last one I will buy.

Lover EnshrinedPosted June 23, 2008 by faith, Fresno
Loved JR Wards brotherhood series, couldn't wait for Phury's story. It was very different from the previous books. I was very disappointed. If she's going to write in a different style, then she needs to start with a whole new series.

DisappointedPosted August 12, 2008 by Reader in YVR, Vancouver
This book was way too full of set up for future books. Very disjointed - the author let the main characters down. They were a sub-plot in this book at best. I was an avid reader of the BDB and I'm not ready to move forward with this series after the last two installments. This is my last purchase for JR Ward.

this bookPosted November 16, 2008 by mamadog, kc
I'm on the fence with this one. Granted it isn't her best book of the Brotherhood, but I don't think people should quit buying her books. Plus, it does leave a lot open for other books to follow. It's not a bad book, it's just not her best.

Not the best of the series, but still an integral part and a definite must read.

I liked it not my favorite book in the series but worth reading. Posted November 29, 2008 by Lydia, New York
I was really looking forward to this book. I was not disappointed. I feel that there could have been more interaction between the two main characters. I do see what Ms Ward was doing though. She gave us a lot to look forward to though, and this will not be my last book that I buy from Ms Ward at all. It is not my favorite story ( Z's Is) but this was a good book.

Best Yet!Posted December 15, 2008 by GS, St. Louis, MO
This installment is my favorite so far mostly because it gives a lot of information and furthers the story of many characters, not just one. This is my favorite series. Definitely read them in order!

So DisappointedPosted February 27, 2009 by K Ross, Glasgow, Scotland
I have read all of the BDB books and for me they started to become disappointing after Lover Revealed - Butch/Marisa.
But I was really looking forward to Phury's story, he seemed like a nice guy and deserving of a good story. This book barely gave him one, in fact, Phury was a secondary character in his own book?!?!
I think I will wait for the reviews on the next book which I believe is Bella's brother Rehvenge - Lover Avenged before I buy it. (Hmm...when did he join the BDB???) -
TouchingPosted August 06, 2009 by Kathy, Cottonwood Heights
Phury is a member of BDB. He is loyal and self sacrificing. These too qualities nearing lost him everything. He has spent the last few centuries believing that he is cursed because he lived and his twin was sold into slavery. Because of his self-destructive behavior he is kicked out of the brotherhood. Phury agreed to be the Primale of the vampire's which means that he is to mate with 40 or so other females. But when Phury meets Cormia the one who is to be his first mate he falls in love with her. There is a lot going on in this book. An opening to changes that I hope Ward will continue to write about.

Two many story linesPosted October 22, 2009 by booklover, camby
The writing was fine, although I hated Phury's inner wizard dialogue, but I found myself flipping through the other plot lines to the Phury and Cormia story line.
