Overview
1915. Dostoevsky, Russian novelist, is considered one of the most outstanding and influential writers of modern literature. In The Insulted and Injured he first explores one of his major themes, the beneficial effects of suffering. The novel begins: Last year, on the evening of March 22, I had a very strange adventure. All that day I had been walking about the town trying to find a lodging. My old one was very damp, and I had begun to have an ominous cough. Ever since the autumn I had been meaning to move, but I had hung on till the spring. I had not been able to find anything decent all day. In the first place I wanted a separate tenement, not a room in other people's lodgings; secondly, though I could do with one room, it must be a large one, and, of course, it had at the same time to be as cheap as possible. I have observed that in a confined space even thought is cramped.

Bio of Fyodor Doestoyevsky
( 1821 AD - 1881 AD), Renowned Russian author and one of Russia's chief literary figures. Dostoevsky is known for his vital style of writing and timeless characters. Highly influential, he is regarded by some as an originator of existentialism. Dostoevsky was educated at St. Petersburg's Military Engineering Academy. In 1849, he was jailed for rebelling against the Tsar. The same year he was sent to a prison camp in Siberia for participating in anti-government activities. After his release in 1854, he served in the Siberian Regiment for the next five years - an experience which altered his thinking and views. The period from 1873 to 1881 was Dostoevsky's most productive as a writer. His monthly journal, The Writer's Diary, was a huge success. His major writings include The Double: A Petersburg Poem (1846), The Village of Stepanchikovo or The Friend of the Family (1859), A Nasty Story (1862), Crime and Punishment (1866), The Raw Youth or the Adolescent (1875), and The Brothers Karamazov (1880).

A great myustery of love, hate and foregivenessPosted February 07, 2009 by Bru, Phoenix
I have heard of the author before but never read anything he wrote. For me he writes as a artist paints. You see pictures of people in great detail as if you were there and knew them.
Even with the detail descriptions the story moved along and was very interesting. It made me think of my life and relations. A very touching story.
I usually read fantasy but tried this on a whim, quite a change . I will go back and read more from this author.
