The Divine Talisman

Overview

To protect his people from the demonic Illysp, Torin, king of Alson, made the ultimate sacrifice. Now, as his best friend and his former love seek to salvage the shattered lands beyond their borders, a treacherous assault costs them their most powerful weapon--the fabled Crimson Sword.

Hopelessly outmatched, Pentania's citizens must fight to flee their conquered homeland or else perish. Yet an even greater threat looms, for the Leviathan has been awakened, an unfathomable creature whose wrath could single-handedly destroy the entire world.

Hope--if any remains--lies in the efforts of a lone elf, a mad witch, and a fallen hero charged with unraveling a series of divine riddles. Yet to do so they must first find a way to break the very bonds of fiendish possession. . . .

Author Information

Eldon Thompson

After washing out as a college quarterback, Eldon Thompson returned to his first love, writing. Unfortunately, he's found wrestling plots and characters to be every bit as rough, though with less physical bruising. The author of The Crimson Sword, he splits his time between the Oregon coast and Southern California, where he is at work on the next legend of Asahiel.

Editorial Reviews

The gory final Legend of Asahiel novel (after 2006's The Obsidian Key) brings this grim fantasy epic to conclusion with plenty of violence and magical mayhem. The dreaded Illysp pressure the forces of good in Pentania with their Illychar, monsters created from the bodies and memories of the dead. Krynwall, capital of Alson, reels from the death of Torin, last bearer of the Crimson Sword, and a power struggle erupts among the city's leaders. Matters worsen when Torin's body is inhabited by the Illychar called Itz lar Thrakkon, the Boundless One. Only half-elven Annleia, daughter of the last Vandari elf, can battle Thrakkon and petition the ancient Dragon God Ravar to learn how to destroy the Illysp once and for all. The final chapter of this dense trilogy is not for new readers, but those familiar with previous events will be satisfied with its sneering villains, bloody battles and decisive climax. (Aug.) Many have condemned the first book for its boring characters and such. In many ways, I can't argue - Torin was a character who spent much time considering his decisions. Book 2 improved with a twist that is noted, though not explained, in the reviews. When I realized this book had no review listed, I had to act.

Book 1 was sitting things in motion. Book 2 began the twist. This book took that twist and twisted it a few more times. If you read book 1 and thought it was "so-so", keep going. If you read book 2 and was afraid of the twist at the end, deciding you wouldn't go into book 3 - get this book!

It took Torin, a character many touted as lacking, and turned him in a direction that I didn't see. It is, quite clearly, the most entertaining of all the series and one that I have loaded on my e-reader. Finish the trilogy, if for no other reason, than to see exactly what Mr. Thompson could do with such setup.
