Two years before Edgar Rice Burroughs became a worldwide celebrity with the publication of Tarzan of the Apes and its twenty-two sequels, which together have sold more than 30 million copies, he published A Princess of Mars. A futuristic sci-fi fantasy romance, A Princess of Mars tells the story of John Carter, a Civil War veteran who inexplicably finds himself held prisoner on the planet Mars by the Green Men of Thark. Together with Dejah Thoris, the princess of another clan on Mars, the unlikely pair must fight for their freedom and save the entire planet from destruction as the life-sustaining Atmosphere Factory slowly grinds to a halt.

Bio of Edgar Rice Burroughs

Edgar Rice Burroughs is one of the world's most popular authors. With no previous experience as a writer, he wrote and sold his first novel--A Princess of Mars--in 1912. In the ensuing thirty-eight years, until his death in 1950, Burroughs produced ninety-one books and a host of short stories and articles. Although he is best known as the creator of the classic Tarzan of the Apes and John Carter of Mars, his restless imagination knew few bounds. Burroughs's prolific pen took readers from the American West to primitive Africa to romantic adventures on the moon, other planets, and beyond the farthest star. No one knows how many copies of Burroughs's books have been published throughout the world. It is conservative to say, however, that with translations into thirty-two known languages, including Braille, the number must run into the hundreds of millions. Considering the additional world-wide following of the Tarzan newspaper feature, radio programs, comic magazines, motion pictures, and television series, Burroughs and his works are certainly known and loved by a legion of fans.

Bio of John Seelye

John Seelye is a graduate research professor of American literature at the University of Florida. He is the author of The True Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain at the Movies, Prophetic Waters: The River in Early American Literature, Beautiful Machine: Rivers and the Early Republic, Memory's Nation: The Place of Plymouth Rock, and War Games: Richard Harding Davis and the New Imperialism. He is also the consulting editor for Penguin Classics in American literature.
