Outlander SeriesPosted January 14, 2008 by mrsjb007, Texas
I have read all of the books in this series, more than once. Claire and Jamie are fully fleshed, complete characters in which a reader can become invested and completely interested in. Together they are involved in a love story that transcends time and place and even through their separations, you root for them to overcome their obstacles and to be together.
I hope other readers find as much enjoyment in this series as I have and I continue to look forward to future novels in this series as well as her other novels and characters as well. -
Outlander SeriesPosted May 02, 2008 by daisynugent, home
The best!! It has it all: history, suspension of reality, magic, romance, war, scientific and medical information, espionage plus a knack for description that makes you live the story. The main characters are facinating and believable and the supporting characters are equally interesting and complex. The book she wrote supporting all her research for this epic is just as compelling and ecletic! I'd want this series if I were to be marooned!!!

Must Read the Series....Posted January 17, 2009 by Lori, Porcia Italy
I read this book some years back and fell in love with the characters, then recently I discovered there were more books and honestly, I couldn't put it down! Just when you start to believe there couldn't be more to tell, or there may not be anything else interesting to read...it delivers in spades!!!
I even found myself searching online to see when the mysterious book 7 would be released! I recommend this series to anyone who enjoys historical romances....believe me when I say, there is so much more to this that one could even begin to describe. It's just that good! -
WOW!!!Posted April 03, 2009 by Lorrie, Aiken, SC
I had heard about these books several years ago, but never got around to reading them. I ran across them on this site in January......if I had known that they were this good! I could not put this book down. I cannot wait to dive into the next one. Enjoy!

A Must Read!!Posted October 03, 2009 by MDLady, Baltimore
I have been reading for pretty close to 35 years and I have never been as mesmerized by a story as I have with this series. Her writing is such that you feel you know these characters; all of them. I have bought quite a few copies of Outlander over the last few years as bait...and it's hooks them every time! Do yourself a favor....try the first book. Give it until she gets through the stones. You will not be disappointed!

Stick With ItPosted October 29, 2009 by L. R., Florida
Without rehashing the plot, I can say this book, while long, was overall a decent read. If you can stick with it until Claire goes to the stone ring, it'll be worth it. I promise it does pick up from that point on. Grit your teeth and suffer through the what feels like endless geneological stuff. (I think an editor should have demanded some of that be woven into the plot in a not-quite-so info dump way, because as-is, it's tedious at points. Now I understand other reviews I've read who complain about the extraneous stuff.) I felt a little lost at times due to Scottish jargon, and that pulled me out of the plot more than once to look stuff up.
As the book continues, the action (thankfully!) does pick up. There is a scene toward the end I feel was gratuitous, and will be uncomfortable for some readers.
**spoiler - Jamie, who suffers torture and a forced m/m rape, tells Claire about it.**
Overall not bad read. If you enjoy Scottish Highlander stories, you'll love it.
If you're looking for hot love scenes, most of the action occurs off-camera, so don't expect any of that.

Excerpt from: Outlander by Diana Gabaldon
Jamie made a fire in a sheltered spot, and sat down next to it. The rain had eased to a faint drizzle that misted the air and spangled my eyelashes with rainbows when I looked at the flames.
He sat staring into the fire for a long time. Finally he looked up at me, hands clasped around his knees.
"I said before that I'd not ask ye things ye had no wish to tell me. And I'd not ask ye now; but I must know, for your safety as well as mine." He paused, hesitating.
"Claire, if you've never been honest wi' me, be so now, for I must know the truth. Claire, are ye a witch "
I gaped at him. "A witch You ' you can really ask that " I thought he must be joking. He wasn't.
He took me by the shoulders and gripped me hard, staring into my eyes as though willing me to answer him.
"I must ask it, Claire! And you must tell me!"
"And if I were " I asked through dry lips. "If you had thought I were a witch Would you still have fought for me "
"I would have gone to the stake with you!" he said violently. "And to hell beyond, if I must. But may the Lord Jesus have mercy on my soul and on yours, tell me the truth!"
The strain of it all caught up with me. I tore myself out of his grasp and ran across the clearing. Not far, only to the edge of the trees; I could not bear the exposure of the open space. I clutched a tree; put my arms around it and dug my fingers hard into the bark, pressed my face to it and shrieked with hysterical laughter.
Jamie's face, white and shocked, loomed up on the other side of the tree. With the dim realization that what I was doing must sound unnervingly like cackling, I made a terrific effort and stopped. Panting, I stared at him for a moment.
"Yes," I said, backing away, still heaving with gasps of unhinged laughter. "Yes, I am a witch! To you, I must be. I've never had smallpox, but I can walk through a room full of dying men and never catch it. I can nurse the sick and breathe their air and touch their bodies, and the sickness can't touch me. I can't catch cholera, either, or lockjaw, or the morbid sore throat. And you must think it's an enchantment, because you've never heard of vaccine, and there's no other way you can explain it."
"The things I know ' " I stopped backing away and stood still, breathing heavily, trying to control myself. "I know about Jonathan Randall because I was told about him. I know when he was born and when he'll die, I know about what he's done and what he'll do, I know about Sandringham because ... because Frank told me. He knew about Randall because he ... he ... oh, God!" I felt as though I might be sick, and closed my eyes to shut out the spinning stars overhead.
"And Colum ... he thinks I'm a witch, because I know Hamish isn't his own son. I know ... he can't sire children. But he thought I knew who Hamish's father is ... I thought maybe it was you, but then I knew it couldn't be, and..." I was talking faster and faster, trying to keep the vertigo at bay with the sound of my own voice.
