Overview

Diana Gabaldon's brilliant storytelling has captivated millions of readers in her bestselling and award-winning Outlander saga. Now, in An Echo in the Bone, the enormously anticipated seventh volume, Gabaldon continues the extraordinary story of the eighteenth-century Scotsman Jamie Fraser and his twentieth-century time-traveling wife, Claire Randall.

Jamie Fraser, former Jacobite and reluctant rebel, is already certain of three things about the American rebellion: The Americans will win, fighting on the side of victory is no guarantee of survival, and he'd rather die than have to face his illegitimate son-a young lieutenant in the British army-across the barrel of a gun.

Claire Randall knows that the Americans will win, too, but not what the ultimate price may be. That price won't include Jamie's life or his happiness, though-not if she has anything to say about it.

Meanwhile, in the relative safety of the twentieth century, Jamie and Claire's daughter, Brianna, and her husband, Roger MacKenzie, have resettled in a historic Scottish home where, across a chasm of two centuries, the unfolding drama of Brianna's parents' story comes to life through Claire's letters. The fragile pages reveal Claire's love for battle-scarred Jamie Fraser and their flight from North Carolina to the high seas, where they encounter privateers and ocean battles-as Brianna and Roger search for clues not only to Claire's fate but to their own. Because the future of the MacKenzie family in the Highlands is mysteriously, irrevocably, and intimately entwined with life and death in war-torn colonial America.

With stunning cameos of historical characters from Benedict Arnold to Benjamin Franklin, An Echo in the Bone is a soaring masterpiece of imagination, insight, character, and adventure-a novel that echoes in the mind long after the last page is turned.

  • 4 stars out of 5Anxiously Awaited...Only to Wait Again!

Those of us who have been anxiously awaiting Diana's new novel of the saga of time traveling have been caught up in the tale for the past few days...however, things went slowly, only to heat up at the end of the novel, again leaving us hanging. Great historical effort as always, although some of the accounts of battles bored me silly except when the main characters were in danger. I'm waiting for the next installment, AGAIN.

I do so LOVE these books, but she is driving me CRAZY!!!!! Will this never end? I cannot stand to be left hanging like I am now. I will be waiting with baited breath for the next novel in a series I thought ended with " A Breathe of Snow and Ashes". PLEASE don't leave we devoted fans waiting too long. It's very well written, I agree, a little slow in the beginning, but what an ending!!

  • 5 stars out of 5Back to waiting................

As others have said, it does start a little slow - but I didn't mind in the least!! Waiting years (and years and years) between books, makes me want to savor each and every page. Reading of the adventures of Jamie/Clair et al. is always such a treat.

Diana tells a good story and her research is top notch - which is one reason each story takes as long as it does. I love learning the little things that I never knew about history (Ben Franklin and his "air baths"!! What a mental picture!!).

Now I will have to (im)patiently wait for the next installment. *sigh*

On a side note, I also downloaded Outlander for 2.99 (!) and will start from the beginning. Wish they would offer a special price on the others in the series. I also loved it in the eBook form - not having to lug around a (close to) 1000 page book was a treat this time.

  • 4 stars out of 5Serious cliff-hanger

I've waited anxiously for this book, and while it didn't disappoint, I am once again waiting for the next one! This one is even more of a cliff-hanger than the previous books, which left me feeling a little frustrated since the books are published so far apart. It was, as usual, very well written and I love the historical context. She spends more time on some of the ancillary characters in this story, which creates a broad and diverse view of the plot, though sometimes the constant perspective switching is distracting. All in all it's another great read and I can't wait for the next book!
