Overview

Branded the queen's whore, Lady Sarah of Remy must wed William of Bronwyn. A powerful and notoriously dangerous warrior, he makes her quiver with a fear--and desire--she has never experienced before. William has known the very worst barbarity. He has no time for emotion. But it comes as a shock, when their desire explodes into full-blown passion, to discover that Lady Sarah is actually an innocent. Their marriage is convenient for William, although he soon finds there's nothing easy about having Sarah as his bride. Willful and defiant she may be, but he's determined to tame her--starting in his bed!

Bio of Denise Lynn

A firm believer in dreams and happy endings, Denise lives with her husband and a petting zoo of one dog and six cats in northwestern Ohio. Denise read books before she rode a bike. She learned early on that if a book wasn't handy it was just as easy to create her own story -- and it was much more fun. At first her stories were based loosely on Disney's The Sword in the Stone. Until she discovered an entire section at the bookstore called Romance! What could be better than pirates, highwaymen or knights? The shelves were filled with the most heroic men imaginable and heroines just as brave. For a long time it was enough to simply read. Then it happened. Denise found one book that she knew without a doubt should have ended differently. Why, if she had written that story she would have... Thus began the romance writing education of Denise Lynn. Well, it could take an entire book to tell that sad, boring story. Let's just say that she is grateful for the Romance Writers of America and all the networking and learning opportunities the organization provides, including the opportunity to enter and final in the RWA's Golden Heart contest in 1999. That's one birthday phone call she'll not forget. But her favorite call came in January of 2002 -- from the Harlequin Historical editor. When not hunched over a keyboard or daydreaming about another story or wishing she was hiking out to Charlie's Bunion, Mount LeConte, the Chimneys or any other spot in eastern Tennessee, Denise can be found in the dustiest section of the local library with her nose stuck in the most fascinating research book.

I have to admit, I bought this book because of the title. Yeah, I know, Harlequin has a random title generator and the title isn't the author's doing or anything, but it was misleading. The warrior doesn't bed her until over halfway through the book after many fits and starts!

But that's not my main beef with this story. The plot wasn't cohesive. The author kept having the h/h resolve plot problems only to lay another set of problems in their path. It got so that I had the impression the author was simply filling out a page count and couldn't come up with one cohesive plot that would do that for her (and IMO she could have with the what she had).

This wouldn't be so much of an issue for me if the h/h had actually evolved in their relationship. They were forced to marry and were in a position not to trust each other in the beginning. The problem was they never learned to trust each other until almost the last page of the book. They both recognize they have trust issues; they have good reason not to trust each other; they simply never do anything about it until almost out of the blue the hero decides to take a leap of faith and make a very flowery love declaration to the heroine on the final page of the last chapter. It struck me as ridiculous seeing where they were in their relationship. Then the epilogue flash forwards to years later and everything is fine and dandy. IMO the book would have been much better if we'd actually seen the h/h working out their issues rather than pushing each other's buttons all the time (and don't get me wrong, button-pushing is good, too; it just shouldn't be the entire premise of the relationship).
