Day Leclaire writes for the Harlequin Romance line and lives in the midst of a maritime forest on Hatteras Island on North Carolina's Outer Banks. Despite the yearly storms that batter them and the frequent power outages, she finds the beautiful climate, superb fishing, and unbeatable seascape more than adequate compensation. Being flexible and having a sense of humor also helps, she's discovered, along with a love for both the island and her craft. Day's interest in writing started at an early age. "There were four kids in our family, the three girls all close together in age. We were home from school one winter day because we'd had a blizzard and Mom. Well, she was practically pulling her hair out in an attempt to keep us entertained. "We'd fought our way through any number of board games, had read all the books in the house and were basically making a total nuisance of ourselves. Out of sheer desperation, Mom told me that if I didn't have any books to read, I should go write one. "So, I did. It was a historical. A Cinderella story set in the Wild West with a wicked stepmother and two wicked stepsisters. As I recall, those two stepsisters bore an uncanny resemblance to my own two sisters. I guess I was out of charity with them at the time!"

Bio of Susan Mallery

Susan Mallery is the bestselling author of over 35 books for Harlequin and Silhouette. She is a reader favorite, publishing in the Harlequin Historicals, Silhouette Intimate Moments and Silhouette Special Edition lines. Best known for combining humor with emotion and creating extraordinary characters who live on in the imagination, Susan publishes five or six books each year. Susan is married and lives with her husband in sunny Southern California where the weather is always perfect and the eccentricities of a writer are considered almost normal. She has two beautiful but not very bright cats, and the world's greatest stepson.

Bio of Carol Marinelli

Carol was born in England to Scottish parents, which meant many long, happy summer holidays spent in Scotland with her two sisters. The only thing a secretarial course taught her was that she didn't want to work in an office. Applying to do her nursing training, she was advised to write the entrance test for the three-year State Registered Nurse Course, but at 18, the two-year State Enrolled Nurse program sounded more attractive. Anyway, if she liked it she could always make up the time later, couldn't she? How simple it all sounded. On completion of her training, she worked for five years in a phenomenally busy Accident and Emergency Department, which she adored. However, itchy feet got the better of her and she headed off for a year in Australia with her younger sister. Six weeks before she came home Carol met her future husband. Proof, she says, that whirlwind holiday romances can work. An extremely expensive courtship followed. Long letters, longer telephone calls, and even longer air flights, until finally they married and settled in Melbourne, Australia. Now seemed the perfect time to get her nursing on track, and she applied and was accepted to do her Bachelor of Nursing. However, a vague feeling of nausea on enrollment day was to change all that. Surely she could combine university with one tiny baby, couldn't she? After all, how much work could it be? Through all of this the desire to write a romance was there and many a night was spent bashing away at the typewriter, and later the computer, but it was so much harder than it first looked and she never managed to quite finish it. While pregnant with her second child, a brilliantstory line came to her. The first book was unceremoniously shelved and she worked hard on her masterpiece. Finally, she plucked up the courage to submit and smugly awaited its acceptance. Of course, it was rejected and, in truth, it was absolutely awful, but an encouraging letter pointing out where she had gone wrong (it was a long letter) kept the writing bug alive. Six months after the birth of her third child, the sudden death of her father, and its painful aftermath forced her to reappraise her life's goals. Her father had never been one to waste a moment, and realizing what a precious gift life was and with her husband's encouragement, Carol decided to seize the day. The initial manuscript was taken down, dusted off, revamped, relocated, and rewritten and finally, after the longest time, accepted. Now she is happy to concentrate mainly on writing, though she will always nurse. The ambition to do a Bachelor of Nursing has been replaced by a desire to do a Bachelor of Midwifery and she is awaiting the implementation of the course in Australia. She remains quietly confident that she can somehow combine family, writing, study, and nursing. After all, how hard could it be?

Bio of Jane Porter

A UCLA grad with an MA in Writing, I am one of those original book geeks, the girl with the coke bottle glasses that sat with a novel next to the classroom door rather than play during recess. I wrote my first story in first grade, my first picture book in second grade and my first novel in 4th, and I've just continued to write from there--bad poetry, passionate essays, romance rich novels and poignant, bittersweet contemporary fiction. But writing doesn't always come easy to me. I have to work at it. To go below the surface and find the real story in each story, the heart of the novel, the one the reader will hopefully remember long after the story is through. Writing makes me a bit mad which is why I work very hard to have good hair. When not writing, what do I do for fun? Travel. I don't know if it's from growing up in a small Central California town, or living abroad with my family when I was 13, but I crave change, travel, adventure. Put me in a car, a ship, a plane and send me off. I subscribe to countless travel magazines, have a library of travel books, and am always interested in where people have been. Then of course, there are my kids. Being the mom of two boys I watch a lot of sports, and do goofy boy things with them like create slug habitats and nurture baby geckos. It's not the life I expected--I was such a Barbie doll girl--but its full of Tom Sawyer moments that surprise, delight and absolutely exasperate me but I wouldn't have it any other way. The boys and I live in Bellevue, Washington, six miles from downtown Seattle, and with the plethora of pro sport teams, rugged mountains, coffee houses and bookstores, it's the perfect place for a writer to call home.
