Bio of Charles Dudley Warner

Warner , Charles Dudley (1829 AD - 1900 AD) American author, editor, and the first president of the National Institute of Arts and Letters. Warner's writings are marked by gentle humour and elegance. His first work, The Book of Eloquence, was published in 1851. After working as a railroad surveyor and practising law, he became the editor of the Courant and later joined the editorial team of Harper's Magazine. He was also appointed the president of the American Social Science Association. His captivating essays are collected in My Summer in a Garden (1870), Being a Boy (1878), The Relation of Literature to Life (1896), and Fashions in Literature (1902). Warner is equally famous for his travel sketches, the most popular of which are Saunterings (1872), A Roundabout Journey (1883), and Our Italy (1891). His novels include The Gilded Age (1873), The Golden House (1894), and That Fortune (1899). Warner also penned the biographies of Captain John Smith (1881), and Washington Irving (1881).
