Robert Dugoni

Biography

Born the middle child in a family of ten children, I didn't get much of a chance to talk, so I wrote. I never knew it would lead to a career. With five brothers I also played and watched a lot of sports and remain a junky for anything on ESPN, especially my San Francisco 49ers and Giants, and my Stanford Cardinals. If I knew as much about writing as sports, well...
Though I've aged to 45 years, my wife will tell you I've never really grown up and don't intend to. I remain a big kid and fancy myself as sort of modern day Peter Pan-type, though without the tights.
About the only thing I've always known was that I wanted to be a writer. I've known it since the seventh grade. Seriously. So in high school when I had to concede to height restrictions and an inability to hit a curve ball that made a professional sports career unlikely, I had no problem hanging up the tennis shoes and spikes for the keyboard, and becoming the editor of the school newspaper. That led to a succession of wonderful opportunities that included meeting Sam Goldman, the best writing teacher in the world, and attending Stanford University to major in journalism and take creative writing courses. Upon graduation I worked as a reporter at the Los Angeles Times until, in a moment of insanity, I decided to attend law school at UCLA. I somehow made it through and took a job at a firm in San Francisco that had a lot of sports nuts like myself. I worked there for twelve years, met the love of my life, and secretly longed to return to writing novels. In the interim I satisfied my artistic thirst by studying acting and performing in stage productions throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, paying special attention to good dialogue. Playing Arthur in Camelot was a highlight - for me, not necessarily the audience. The Next American Idol I am not.
In July 1998 I kept a wedding day promise to my wife to return her home to her beloved Northwest within four years of our wedding day. So, on our anniversary I drove a packed U-haul truck across the Oregon border. It doesn't sound romantic, and it wasn't, but I'm a man of my word, if nothing else.
In addition to the true story, The Cyanide Canary, my debut novel, The Jury Master, is to be released March 2006. I've completed a second novel, Damage Control and I am working on others. I know I'm supposed to call writing "work," but it's not work when you truly love what you do. Writing is my passion, and I've been blessed by so many people along this journey. My advice to my two kids and everyone else who asks (not many do, but it sounds good)?
